Africa’s Green Innovation Milestone: Launch of the timbuktoo GreenTech Hub
On December 6, 2024, a new chapter in Africa’s fight against climate change and drive toward sustainable development was written with the launch of the timbuktoo GreenTech Hub at Konza Technopolis, Kenya. This landmark initiative marks a major step in empowering startups and innovators to tackle the continent’s climate challenges with transformative solutions.
The GreenTech Hub, which forms part of the timbuktoo initiative by UNDP, is one of ten Pan-African innovation hubs envisioned to drive entrepreneurship and innovation across Africa. Each hub focuses on a thematic area, with the GreenTech Hub dedicated to accelerating solutions in renewable energy, waste management, and climate resilience.
A Pan-African Movement for Change
The journey toward the GreenTech Hub began with a resounding call for applications. Over 600 submissions from 40+ countries flooded in, underscoring the demand for innovation and solutions across the continent. From this pool, 43 startups from 14 African nations were selected to participate in the hub’s accelerator program, representing the brightest minds in African green technology.
Speaking at the launch, UNDP Assistant Secretary-General Ahunna Eziakonwa emphasized the importance of this moment:
“Africa is at crossroads in tackling climate change, facing challenges but also immense opportunities for green innovation. To our founders, what a moment of pride to have you. It’s time to unlock the potential for a greener future”
Kenya, with its leadership in renewable energy and innovation, was the natural choice to host the hub. As President William Ruto officiated the launch, one message resonated deeply with all in attendance:
‘Kenya’s renewable energy leadership inspires innovation. The timbuktoo GreenTech Hub will empower youth to create solutions that tackle climate change and drive inclusive growth.
Innovators at the Heart of the Movement
The launch celebrated not only the establishment of the hub but also the extraordinary innovators who are part of its first cohort. These 43 startups represent Africa’s unwavering potential to address climate challenges.
One standout example is Joy of Newdigit Technologies, whose groundbreaking green hydrogen solution combines a zero-emission generator with clean water production and medical-grade oxygen for homes and healthcare facilities. This is just one of many innovations that embody the hub’s mission to foster transformative, scalable solutions for the continent.
A Hub of Opportunity and Collaboration
The timbuktoo GreenTech Hub aims to be more than just a space for innovation — it is a platform for collaboration, mentorship, and growth. By leveraging partnerships with the Government of Kenya, private sector stakeholders, and global entities, the hub provides its startups with the tools to scale their impact.
Key features of the hub include:
