Stepping into the world of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) felt like venturing into a new universe — a shift from capturing life’s moments behind the lens to shaping change that transcends borders. In this blog, I uncover the vibrant tapestry of disability inclusion within the halls of UNDP, where every story resonates with hope and empowerment.

Joining the dynamic workforce of the UNDP team in Kenya was an honor beyond words. Yet, it wasn’t without its moments of uncertainty. After two decades entrenched in the captivating world of the film industry, the prospect of change loomed large. It took a gentle nudge from a cherished friend to propel me towards this transformative journey.

The inclusion of a disability clause in the job description sparked a flicker of hope within me. It was a beacon signaling that my abilities would be recognized beyond the confines of my wheelchair. The sheer joy of receiving that first email confirming my selection was a validation — an affirmation that my worth transcended any physical limitations.

Disability isn’t merely a footnote in the grand symphony of human existence; it’s a profound chapter that reverberates within every family, every community. By embracing disability inclusion, UNDP extends a warm embrace of acceptance and opportunity to those who have long been marginalized.

It’s about amplifying voices, nurturing innovative solutions, and fostering a deep sense of belonging. It’s about laying the foundation for a future where disability isn’t synonymous with limitation but with boundless potential.

With staggering statistics revealing 1.3 billion disabled individuals worldwide, and 8.9 million in Kenya alone, the urgency for inclusion couldn’t be clearer. Disability isn’t a barrier to contribution; it’s a vibrant tapestry of diverse skills and talents awaiting to be unfurled.

In the quiet of the night, I often find myself reflecting on the countless individuals confined within the walls of their homes — their dreams overshadowed by the specter of inaccessible opportunities. It serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of inclusion — the ability to breathe life into dormant aspirations and illuminate the path to a brighter tomorrow.

My disability isn’t a limitation but a facet of my identity — a prism through which my dreams and aspirations radiate. Like any other individual, I yearn to dance, to laugh, to savor the richness of life without the burden of societal perceptions.

In the sanctuary of my dreams, barriers dissolve, and opportunities abound — a realm where inclusion isn’t an afterthought but a fundamental principle.

While UNDP has made commendable strides in disability inclusion, there’s still an expanse of uncharted territory to traverse. Ensuring accessibility in physical spaces and digital realms is paramount, alongside proactively integrating individuals with disabilities into initiatives and employment opportunities.

Every stride forward in our journey towards inclusivity is a triumph — a testament to our unwavering commitment to a world where diversity isn’t merely celebrated but woven into the very fabric of society. Together, let’s champion a future where barriers crumble, and every individual — regardless of ability — finds their rightful place in the radiant embrace of the sun.
