Transformed by hope: How the Isiolo Youth Center changed my life
The Isiolo Youth Center has truly changed lives, and now I want to share my own experience.
I was a young mother of three, feeling trapped at home, frustrated, and hopeless. Depression weighed heavily on me, and I didn’t know where to turn for help. But when the center started, I found a ray of hope. I met other young people facing different challenges, and together, we received training, counseling, and mentorship. Today, as you can see, I am a completely different person.
I have transformed, and I owe it all to the support of UNDP, Kenya School of Government, and the County Government of Isiolo. This safe space they have provided has been a lifeline for me.
Now, I actively participate in peer counseling, particularly for young mothers like myself. I have also had the opportunity to receive training in film production, and I am currently working on creating digital content that highlights community initiatives. Additionally, I proudly serve as a community champion and ambassador for peace and cohesion. It’s incredible to think of how far I’ve come, especially considering that there was once a time when I walked into this center carrying my baby.
UNDP’s role in this journey has been truly profound. Their modest investment has attracted numerous partners, including the private sector, government agencies, UN agencies, and civil society organizations. The experience in Isiolo is a testament to the power of collective action and a ‘whole of society’ approach to development.
I want to express my deepest appreciation to UNDP, through the devolution team. Without their collective effort and teamwork, none of this would have been possible. Each one of us has played a significant role in this success story. Let us continue the great work as we replicate the Isiolo model in other counties.
